Happy World Oceans Day

As you know, I love the Ocean, and recently I blogged about a 17-year-old boy who is trying to get rid of all the plastic that winds up in the ocean with his Ocean Cleanup Project.

Well, June 8th was the official “World Oceans Day.” It has been unofficially celebrated since 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development.

My family just came back from spending a week at the beach, to kick off the summer, and I spent the whole time picking up shells, watching the Pelicans, seagulls, and sandpipers soar over the water and run along the seashore.  It felt so good just sitting on the beach staring out at the ocean and watching the waves roll in.

On World Oceans Day, people around the planet celebrate and honor the ocean! According to their website, a healthy world ocean is critical to our survival.  Every year, World Oceans Day provides an opportunity to honor, help protect and conserve our world’s shared ocean.

Who doesn’t Love the Ocean?!  But we need to protect it.

The ocean generates most of the oxygen we breathe, it helps feed us with all the fish and seafood living in the ocean, it regulates our climate, it cleans the water we drink, it offers a pharmacopeia of medicines and “for me” it provides limitless inspiration!

Since World Oceans Day was started in Canada, The Ocean Project, working in partnership with leading organizations from all sectors, including the World Ocean Network, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and many others, adding up to 2,000 organizations coming together to promote World Oceans Day. They also created a three-year global petition movement to secure UN recognition until it was recognized officially by the United Nations in 2008.

World Oceans Day has been celebrated in a variety of ways over the years, including launching campaigns, special events at aquariums and zoos, outdoor explorations, beach cleanups, conservation action programs, art contests, film festivals and sustainable seafood events!

Next year I plan on being part of the celebration!
